The Best Proteins to Eat on the Ketogenic Diet
The Ketogenic Diet – an ultra-low calorie eating program that requires you to keep your daily carb intake below 50g – has been around for a very long time. In fact, it was originally designed to help prevent and control seizures. These days, though, the Ketogenic Diet is more commonly used to achieve rapid weight loss.
To be fair, it's effective for both these purposes.
But, as mentioned, the Ketogenic Diet is all about reducing carbs as much as possible. When you do that, though, you still need to get enough calories. So, your protein intake is going to have to increase dramatically. This raises a question, however. What are the best proteins to eat on the Ketogenic Diet?
Here are a few things to keep in mind when selecting your protein sources.
Grass-Fed
It might seem strange to put so much emphasis on what cows, goats or other animals eat but, the truth is that this has a major impact on the products sources from those animals. Research has found that both dairy and meat derived from grass-fed animals has less saturated fat and is higher in health fats like conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and omega-3 fatty acids.
Grass-fed protein is also a better source of various micronutrients which have a wide range of healthy benefits, from enhanced athletic performance to improved immune function.
Organic and Non-GMO
One of the biggest challenges that those attempting to follow a Ketogenic Diet face is finding clean foods. Because the Ketogenic Diet is fairly restrictive, it can be tempting to grab foods that are already packaged, prepared and ready-to-go. Unfortunately, these foods are often heavily processed, taken from low-quality sources and laden with harmful additives.
This is especially true when it comes to protein powders and supplements. These products are incredibly useful and convenient tools for helping you reach your nutritional goals. As long as you chose them carefully. Make sure to pick a supplement – like those produced by Naked Nutrition – that are taken from organic, non-GMO, high-quality sources.
A Word on Plants
With all of that said, we need to talk about plant proteins in relation to the Ketogenic Diet. Plants are nutrient-rich sources of just about everything that your body needs to function properly, including protein.
Unfortunately, they are often very high in carbohydrates as well. And that doesn't work with the whole keto thing. Be careful, then, when selecting your plant-based protein powders. If you do pick one that has a fair amount of carbs in it, just be mindful that you will need to limit how often you use it each day.
